MAY/JUNE Programme 2009


1. Chainsaw Crosscutting with Safe Use & Maintenance.
6th & 7th May (2 day basic) £160.00 + VAT
8th May (1 day refresher) £ 98.00 + VAT
Certificate renewal – Every 5 years.


This course is for casual users of chainsaws (e.g. fencing/firewood cutting). The first day covers health & safety along with maintenance of the chainsaw, and the second is a practical day. Candidates must provide full personal safety equipment and chainsaw to do the course. Certification with LANTRA is included.

Funding may be available for some candidates. Please ask the Training Coordinator.

2. Chainsaw Medium Fell
26th – 28th May (3 day) £314.40 + VAT
Certificate renewal – Every 5 years


NPTC certified course for tree felling up to 30” diameter (CS32). Candidates must have completed CS30 and 31 to qualify for this course. Candidates must provide full personal safety equipment and chainsaw to do the course.

Funding may be available for some candidates. Please ask the Training Coordinator

3. Chainsaw Crosscutting with Safe Use & Maintenance, plus small fell
1st – 5th June (5 day course) £528.70 + VAT
22nd – 25th June (4 day course) £456.05 + VAT


The 5 day course allows candidates to obtain the NPTC CS30 and 31 certificates. The 4 day course is for those who hold Crosscutting and Maintenance Certificates who wish to move onto small fell. Candidates must provide full personal safety equipment and chainsaw to do the course.
Funding may be available for some candidates. Please ask the Training Coordinator.

4. Chainsaw Windblown
29th May (1 Day) £179.40 + VAT


NPTC Certificated course. Candidates must have completed CS30, 31 and 32 to qualify for this course. Candidates must provide full personal safety equipment and chainsaw to do the course.

Funding may be available for some candidates. Please ask the Training Coordinator.

5. Basic Food Safety
28th May or 25th June
Including CIEH Certification £ 65.00 + VAT


An excellent introduction to basic food safety for personnel working in catering, retail or manufacturing. All aspects of food safety are covered, including personal hygiene, cleaning and disinfection, design of food premises and equipment, pest control, legislation, and bacteriology. Please note that the exam papers are now industry specific – when booking a place, please inform the Training Coordinator whether you will require the catering, retail or manufacturing paper.

We can also arrange the CIEH Level 3 Award in Supervising Food Safety or the CIEH level 4 Award in Managing Food Safety.

6. Forklift Training
18th – 22nd May or 15th – 19th June
2 Day basic £190.00 + VAT
Refresher £100.00 + VAT


Arranged on candidate’s farms to suit requirements, this training and certification is a legal requirement for drivers. There will be aspects of Health & Safety and practical sessions followed by a practical and a written test. If it is more than 3 years since you took your test, you should consider the one-day refresher course.

7. Emergency First Aid (1 day)
£65.00 + VAT (including certification)

This HSE recognized course is a one day basic first aid course covering First Aid principles, vital signs, shock, accident procedure, CPR, dealing with incidents, bleeding, fractures (minor) choking.

(This certification is valid for three years. If it is 3 years since you did your test, you should consider attending a one day course for a certificate update).

First Aid at Work courses can be arranged where required. This is a four day course and is required where there are 5 or more employees in a high risk workplace, or 20 or more employees in a medium risk workplace.

8. Car & Trailer Test

On the 1st January 1997, an amendment to the Driving Licence Regulations came into effect and altered the rules in respect of towing trailers – including horseboxes and animal trailers. Anyone who passed their driving test after 1st January 1997 (regardless of age), now needs to take a separate car & trailer test. We can arrange the necessary training and test for you. Presently looking for funding.

9. ATV – 1 day experienced user or 2 day basic
£90.00 + VAT (1 day) £150.00 + VAT (2 day)

These courses cover avoiding accidents, what to do in an emergency, getting the best from your machine in different conditions, and the relevant requirements and how to meet them. The one-day course is suitable for those who already have some experience, whilst the tow day is for novices. Note: For the one-day course, candidates must complete a LANTRA “Experienced Operator” declaration prior to attending.

10. PA1 – Safe Use of Pesticides
11th May £65.00 + VAT


The course covers the basic training in safe use of pesticides and is required before applying for certification with the National proficiency Test Council. Those wishing to take any of the application units need to have taken PA1 first.

11. PA6 – Handheld Applicators
12th May £65.00 + VAT


Training in the application of pesticides by hand- held sprayers (knapsack). Classroom/outdoor training day to give candidates a good insight as to the implications and feel of a handheld sprayer.

12. PA2 – Ground Crop Sprayer
13th May £65.00 + VAT


On-farm training in the application of pesticides by ground crop sprayers. PA2 training covers a range of different sprayers and nozzle types with specific training for each.

13. PA4 – Slug Pellet Application (half-day only)
14th May £50.00 + VAT


On-farm training to give candidates a good insight as to the practicalities and legislation of slug pellet application.

Following the training days, candidates can either organize their own NPTC Assessments or we can organize it for them.

14. Animal Transport (Short Haul)

If you transport animals over 65 km (approx 40 miles) for commercial purposes, then you will require the new Certificate of Competence. Our training course will provide candidates with the necessary knowledge to take the NPTC test. Some candidates may feel able to sit the test without having fir done the course. If this applies to you, please discuss this with the Training Coordinator.

15. EBLEX – Beef Live to Dead
9th June £35.00 + VAT


This in-depth talk and discussion with a specialist will be held at Whitley Bay Slaughterhouse. Make an assessment of fat cover and conformation of live cattle using the EUROP grid. View the same animals on the hook, in the chillers with the actual classification. Compare and discuss earlier assessment along with Animal Health and Welfare at the latter stages of the supply chain. This is an extension to the ‘Walk the Talk’ Programme which has received funding from LANTRA, hence the attractive price.

13/16 Year old Quad bike
Fire Risk Assessment (including use of fire extinguishers)

1 day course takes candidates through the theory of fires, fire hazards, fire safety legislation, the risk assessment process and fire plans. – This is a certificated course; would it help with insurance premiums?
